Some children do not get the financial support they need from their families. They may have a parent who is dead, disabled, in jail, unemployed, or simply not around to care for them. The relative who is taking care of them may not be able to afford to pay for the family's food, rent, clothing and other basic living expenses. That caretaker may also have difficulty in finding a job. The California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program gives money to these caretakers while helping them find a job that will allow them to pay for the family's basic living expenses. If you are on CalWORKs, you will also receive health coverage through Medi-Cal and may be eligible for a number of other benefits.
You may hear CalWORKs referred to as TANF, which stands for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. This is the federal grant program that funds CalWORKs. Each state receives a TANF grant, but they have flexibility in how they run their programs. It's also important to realize that CalWORKs is run through county welfare departments, and each county has specific rules. CalWORKs used to be known as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC).
