COBRA & Continuation Coverage:
The Basics

If you are working, your employer may offer health coverage. You might lose that coverage for a number of reasons, like being laid off, quitting, or having your hours reduced. When you lose employer-sponsored health coverage for these or other similar reasons, there are laws that may allow you to keep that coverage for up to three years. These laws are known as COBRA, Cal-COBRA, and OBRA, and the coverage they allow for is called "continuation coverage."

Your employer will no longer pay for any part of this coverage. Spouses and dependents of those on an employer-sponsored health plan are protected by continuation coverage laws in most situations. Domestic partners are also protected in some cases.
