Medicare Part D and You - The Details: Signing Up for a Plan

If you are on Medi-Cal and Medicare, you will automatically be signed up for a Prescription Drug Plan. Medi-Cal will stop paying for most of your drugs and Medicare will start to pay for them on January 1, 2006. The Plan will be assigned to you randomly, but you may switch plans both before and after the plan goes into effect. It’s important to know which drugs you are on so that you can make an informed decision. This Planning Tool can help you get organized.

If you are not on Medi-Cal, you can decide on whether or not to sign up for a plan. You do not have to sign up for a Prescription Drug Plan. It is a voluntary program. The insurance you have now might suit your needs better than a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan will.

If you are thinking about signing up for a Plan, you can do so between November 15, 2005 and May 15, 2006. After that date, penalties may apply. If you have other drug insurance from an employer or a union that is at least as good as the average Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, you can apply later than May 15th without paying the penalty.
